Used golf clubs, should you or shouldn’t you? This is a question that many golfers ask themselves when it’s time for a new set of clubs.

Golf clubs can be very expensive. That’s why many people consider buying used golf clubs instead of new ones.

Let’s talk about some of the things you should know before you buy a set of used golf clubs?

The first thing you need to check is the club heads for face wear. Often times clubs that have been used for a long time will have a shiny worn spot in the center. This isn’t good because the club face won’t hold the ball as well as it should. Make sure that the grooves on the club still have well-defined edges and be sure to stay away from used clubs that show signs of heavy wear as these can affect the flight of your ball

The shaft is also another important thing to look at when you are inspecting used clubs. To test graphite shafts check to make sure they don’t have worn areas or indentations and then twist the grip and the head of the club in opposite directions. You should feel a substantial bit of resistance. When testing steel shafts, check for the same signs of wear and look down the shaft to make sure it hasn’t been bent back into shape.

Inspect the grips on the golf clubs. You will be looking for cracks, splits, and worn areas. Keep in mind that it will cost you between $6 and $15 per club before you purchase a used set of clubs and add that on top of your purchase price.

Another quick test, you can do is to lie of the clubs and compare them. Make sure they all appear to have come from the same set. After all, you don’t want a set of used golf clubs with different shaft types or models.

The final test is the only way that you can really tell how a used set of golf clubs will perform. You will need to find a place to take a few test swings and see how they feel to you. This is very important because, you will be using them for a long time and your score will depend on them.

The last thing you should do is compare prices for new clubs versus what you will be paying for your used clubs. Sometimes you can get a new set for less than what the used set is selling for. Always be sure to keep a look out, because sometimes you can find a great deals at your local golf store or by doing some shopping online.

Purchasing a set of golf clubs is a big deal, so don’t jump in too quickly when it comes to getting the right clubs for you!

We can’t blame the golf club manufacturers for targeting their most profitable market of right-handed golfers, but it is quite difficult for golfers who play left handed to find the selection offered to the mainstream players.

I actually throw right handed but bat left handed. However, when I was young and first took up golf, I did so right handed as I used my dad’s golf clubs. I’ve often wondered if I had just golfed lefty if I might have had even better results.

Here are some tips on how to narrow down your selection when purchasing golf clubs.

Some play weekend golf while others play a more serious game at a higher level. If the occasional game is your pace, a low to mid-performance club should work for you, while a high-performance club is recommended for those who’ll play more regularly.

The old adage that the more expensive the club, the better it is simply doesn’t hold wash anymore. If you do enough homework and read reviews you’ll find a club that matches your level of interest. Don’t be afraid to check out used clubs as they can give you the club you need at a good price.

Woods
A typical golfer’s bag will have a driver and a couple of fairway woods, a 3 wood and a 5 wood, for instance.

Irons
Irons feature thin clubheads with grooves on it. Experienced players opt for a blade style iron while beginners get a cavity-back style. A blade-style has a clubhead with a full back, whereas a cavity back’s clubhead is hollow. It is hollowed out to create a perimeter weighting effect helpful for less-experienced golfers.

Irons are categorized as long (1, 2, 3,4), mid- (5,6,7) and short (8,9). Short irons are the easiest to hit and the long ones are the hardest. The shorter the iron, the more loft there is and for beginners, the more loft, the better.

Putters
Putters come in clubhead styles of blade, heel-toe and mallet. Lengths come in belly putters, standard and broomstick (long) putters. the option you choose is a personal choice.

Utility clubs/hybrids
The clubs combine features of woods and irons and are best for beginners who may not want to buy too many clubs.

It’s important to know that most new clubs fit individuals at the average height of 5’10” for men and 5’5” for women. If you are significantly shorter or taller than these figures, you should get your club fitted to your height.

There is a new type of wood known as a hybrid.

The hybrid clubs combines the straight-hitting characteristics of irons with the easy-to-hit-in-the-air characteristics of higher-lofted woods. Often used for long shots from a difficult rough, the club is becoming very popular with players who have a difficult time getting the ball airborne with long irons.

These clubs are particularly becoming more popular with older people who have lost the ability to get a full size swing. Hybrids allow for a shorter back swing while launching the same height and distance you are use to hitting with a wood.

It might be worth your time to head to a local golf shop and take a look at these new, innovative hybrid golf clubs.

With Christmas arriving, you may be getting a new set of golf clubs under the tree. And you may not be. :-)

If you didn’t get that new set of golf clubs as a gift, someone did. Chances are they may decide to sell their used clubs and you might find a bargain.

If you plan to choose used golf clubs as beginner’s tools, scrutinizing before purchasing is a must. The clubheads, the shafts, and the grips are golfclub parts that should pass inspection first before landing a decent spot in your golf equipment cabinet.

Another excellent golf tip when buying used clubs is to make certain the set of used golfclubs you’re eyeing have set consistency. They should be a matched set to produce the best results for you.

It will also help a lot if you check first the price of new clubs vs. used.
